After the debut album by the half-British, half-German band Message, the slightly changed line-up with Tom McGuigan (vocals, sax, mellotron), Allan Murdoch (guitar), Horst Stachelhaus (bass) and Gunther Klingel (drums) returned to Dieter Dierks' studio in Stommeln in 1973 to record their second LP, From Books And Dreams. Produced once again by Peter Hauke, this time they played rather dark, heavy soundscapes, a mixture of cosmic hard rock and raw psychedelic-traumatic arrangements, which even got a jazzy touch now and then thanks to the occasional saxophone work of lead singer Tommy McGuigan. The extremely creepy cover by Helmut Wenske, depicting a skull with a snake in its eye sockets, reminiscent of the cover of McChurch Soundroom's Delusion LP, perfectly visualised the oppressive musical atmosphere. Despite a lack of interest and poor sales for this album, released on Bacillus Records, the band released several more LPs after a label change. However, the first pressings of their first two albums remain the most sought-after rarities.
