This eponymous album, released in August 1971 on the Regal Zonophone label, was the second and final album by Tear Gas, a Scottish quartet from Glasgow. It was recorded at Island Studios and produced by Tony Chapman. At the time of the recordings, the band consisted of Davey Batchelor (voc, g), Zal Cleminson (g), Chris Glen (b) and Eddie McKenna (dr). In contrast to their debut album, which sank without a trace, here they present hard-hitting hard rock with magnificent guitar work, a driving bass and powerful drums, to which singer Davey Batchelor lends his own distinctive touch. Varied, imaginative and full of musical surprises, they demonstrate their remarkable musical prowess here. Keyboardist Ronnie Leahy, who is not credited on the album, enriches the sound in places with progressive elements. Due to a lack of promotion, the well-deserved success eluded them on their second album as well. In early 1972, Alex Harvey joined the group as the singer and the band was henceforth known as The Sensational Alex Harvey Band.
This final LP, with a cover designed by the legendary design studio Hipgnosis, is now regarded as an underrated gem of hard rock and proto-heavy metal. It is one of the few albums that can easily hold its own in terms of heaviness with greats such as Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Night Sun, and others.
