Deep Purple recorded their debut album in just two days, which was issued in July 1968. It contains eight songs, half self-penned, half covers, all in the wake of the pop/psychedelic movement. So this is not yet the hard rockin’ band, which later became world famous. The LP with the hit single Hush was a success in the USA, after all, the album reached No. 24 in the Billboard Pop Chart.
In their native England, however, released with delay only in September 1968, only a few albums were sold. The small edition with much simpler cover art went almost unnoticed there. Original mono UK pressings however experience a huge demand today, not only from die-hard Purple-fans.
