Emerging from London’s beat scene, and following numerous name changes and line-up shifts, the group Samuel Prody was finally formed in 1969 on the initiative of Tony Savva (voc, g, b). The other members were guitarist and singer Derek Smallcombe, bassist Stephen Day, and drummer John Boswell. In Brighton, they were given the opportunity to rehearse the songs they had written over the months on stage. In the period that followed, they played numerous gigs in and around Brighton, including as the support act for Andromeda. Thanks to good contacts in the music scene, they were given free studio time at London’s Trident Studios, where they recorded their eponymous debut album.
Curiously, this first and only album was released in 1971 exclusively in Germany on the Global Records label, with cover art by Witt Design Studio. They played a powerful brand of psychedelic hard rock featuring distorted guitars, driving bass, powerful drums and wild, often multi-voiced vocals. Unfortunately, it went completely unnoticed and the band split up in the same year. As this heavy-rock gem found hardly any buyers at the time, the German first pressing is now a sought-after collector’s item worldwide and, of course, extremely rare!
