The London-based hard rock band Pink Fairies was formed in 1969 by former members of The Deviants, the Canadian guitarist and singer Paul Rudolph, the bassist and singer Duncan Sanderson, and the two drummers and singers Russell Hunter and John Charles Alder (also known as Twink, who had previously recorded his solo album Think Pink). They were active in the underground and psychedelic scene of the early 1970s, promoting free music and often performing improvised and provocative sets at free festivals. The major label Polydor became aware of the group and jumped on the bandwagon of this rebellious spirit by offering them a record deal for an album.
The quartet recorded their debut album Never Neverland at Command Studios in Piccadilly, London, co-produced by the band and Neil Slaven. It was released in May 1971 by Polydor in England and in three other countries (DE, IT, NZ) and a year later in Canada. They played hard rock with psychedelic influences, proto-punk, space rock and a few psychedelic ballads, always with Paul Rudolph’s superb guitar playing at the forefront. However, Twink left the band after the LP had been released. One of the most important psychedelic hard rock debuts of the early 1970s, particularly as an attractive original English special edition in an elaborate PVC outer with stencil printing, a fold-out cover and a picture inner sleeve, it is very rare and expensive today.
