Known in the British psychedelic underground scene as the former drummer of the psych-rock band Tomorrow and the Pretty Things, with their concept album S.F. Sorrow, John Charles Alder – who went by the name Twink – began work on his solo album Think Pink in mid-1969. Thanks to his many contacts and collaborations, he was able to recruit a number of renowned musicians for his project. He was supported by guitarist Paul Rudolph (The Deviants), multi-instrumentalist Steve Peregrin Took (Tyrannosaurus Rex), bassist John Wood (Tomorrow), as well as Wally Allen (p) and John Povey (sit, mell) from The Pretty Things. Mick Farren, frontman of The Deviants, took on the role of production manager. The recordings took place at London’s Recorded Sound Studios in July 1969.
The LP, released by Polydor in the spring of 1970 and featuring photographs by Hipgnosis, surprises with its musical cohesion, which gives the impression of the work of an extremely tight-knit band. It is an incredibly diverse album, containing both instrumental pieces and songs with varied vocal arrangements. It has a strong psychedelic and experimental feel, full of Paul Rudolph’s magnificent heavy fuzz guitar, wild electronic effects and rousing world music interludes. Immediately following this project, Twink founded the band Pink Fairies together with Rudolph. This first and only LP by Twink is regarded as one of the underrated gems among psychedelic freak-out albums and an absolute must-have for psychedelic fans.
