The follow-up Bryter Later features members of Fairport Convention as well as prominent musicians such as John Cale and The Beach Boys drummer Mike Kowalski. Like his debut Five Leaves Left, it was again produced by Joe Boyd and revealed a more lush and joyful sound. This second release from 1971 was in fact deliberately a more popular approach. Drake produced wonderful evocative lyrics and captivating melodies. Unfortunately, it was also unsuccessful at the time of its release, as was the follow-up album Pink Moon.
