One of the heaviest of the new progressive rock outfits launched on the Vertigo label in 1970 was the legendary Canadian-British power trio May Blitz, which was formed in London in 1969. After their debut album flopped, they were given the chance to record a second LP. The recording sessions took place at London’s Sound Techniques and Air-Studios with the support of legendary producer John Anthony. The follow-up album The Second Of May was released in May 1971, once again featuring an eccentric cover design by Tony Benyon. Musically, however, it shows several differences compared to the first LP: the blend of heavy psych and blues rock is here expanded to include progressive passages from genres such as jazz and folk. The group's own compositions sound musically much more accomplished. This artistic increase is made even more evident by the superb production.

But even this was to no avail. Despite successful live performances and a loyal fan base, this album, like the first, unfortunately sold virtually nothing. Consequently, the record company terminated the contract prematurely, causing them to split at the end of 1971. British Vertigo original pressings of this hard progressive rock LP – as well as the self-titled debut album – are now of enormous collector’s value!
