Founded in London in 1969, the heavy power trio May Blitz – following line-up changes on bass and drums – consisted of Jamie Black (g, voc) and Reid Hudson (b), both Canadians, and British drummer Tony Newman (formerly of the Jeff Beck Group). The band’s live performances were legendary within the club scene and so they scored a record deal with the then-new progressive label Vertigo Records. The recording sessions for their self-titled debut album took place at London’s De Lane Lea Studios, produced by the band themselves. It was released in July 1970 with a comic-style, whimsical cover design by Tony Benyon and offers a mix of heavy riffs, psychedelic breaks, melodic songwriting and extended jams.
Unfortunately, it received no attention at the time. Just one year later, in 1971, their second LP was released. This combination of heavy psych and blues rock is an absolute must-have for anyone interested in the early development of heavy music. A real killer album! Maybe the main reason why this LP is incredibly sought after among global collectors.
