The second and final album with the awkward title Manfred Mann Chapter Three - Volume Two was released just one year after the debut of the same name in October 1970. This experimental work also combined elements of rock, blues, jazz and funk. The band was once again reinforced by a large brass section. In addition to various guests such as Brian Hugg (g) and Harry Beckett (tr), among others, there was Sonny Corbett (tr), Gerald Drewett (trbn), Dave Coxhill (sax), Clive Stevens (sax), and Carl Griffiths (sax). The progressive jazz rock with dark grooves and lots of tasteful keyboards, accompanied by big, blaring brass sections, was never destined to be played on the radio or to become a hit.
The Vertigo album, designed by photographer and designer Keef (Keith MacMillan), once again found few buyers. As they couldn't get beyond club gigs and the cost of supporting so many musicians was enormous, Mann and Hugg called it quits a few months later. The two albums released by this short-lived band have long been considered lost masterpieces of the era and have been sought after by funk and soul jazz collectors for years.
