The Mannheim-based prog-rock band Kin Ping Meh was very popular at the time. After many successful tours in 1971, the quintet drastically reduced the number of their concerts the following year and focused on festivals and support slots for Uriah Heep, Deep Purple and the Scorpions. As a result, following their self-titled debut album at the start of 1972, their second album was released already in June. The recordings were once again made at Hamburg’s Windrose Studios, once more in collaboration with Achim Reichel and Frank Dostal as producers and the brilliant Conny Plank as sound engineer. The quintet was further supported by the musicians Uli Groß (g), Gagey Mrozeck (g, Twenty Sixty Six And Then), Dieter Kuhlmann (bag) and Erich Doll (bj). Like many prog bands, Kin Ping Meh became more commercial, combining their prog rock with classic rock sounds and country elements, and incorporating pop-oriented elements alongside catchy rhythms. The album No. 2 was released on Polydor’s newly founded progressive rock label Zebra and featured a close-up of a South Vietnamese pot-bellied pig on the cover. It was moderately successful and the band continued to tour extensively. The first two albums remain the band’s most sought-after collector’s items to this day.
