The four-piece band Epsilon from Marburg in Hesse, named after the fifth letter of the Greek alphabet, was formed in October 1970 when guitarist and singer Michael Winzkowski joined the trio of Walter Ortel (org, p, voc, perc), Michael Ertl (b) and Hartmut Pfannmüller (dr, perc). After just a few months, they became the first band to secure a record deal with the newly founded label Bacillus Records. In January 1971, recording for their eponymous debut album already took place at Dierks Studios in Cologne-Stommeln, with Peter Hauke as producer and Dieter Dierks as sound engineer. And just three months later, in March, their first album was released, with a cover design by Norbert Friedl (who also designed the cover for Hairy Chapter – Can’t Get Through).
The two sides of the LP present a progressive, organ-driven hard rock with elements of blues, jazz and classical references à la The Nice. Particularly noteworthy are the varied keyboard and piano playing of Walter Ortel and the flowing solos and rocking licks of guitarist Michael Winzkowski, who also sang all the English lyrics. Their debut album enjoyed some success, allowing the band to produce two further LPs, neither of which, however, reached the level of their debut.
