The musicians of the band Egg, who were under contract with Decca, were offered the opportunity to produce a „psychedelic“ album for another label. Arzachel was a fun project, as the pseudonyms on the back cover indicate: Dave Stewart as „Sam Lee-Uff“ (org), Steve Hillage aka „Simeon Sasparella“ (g), Mont Campbell aka „Njerogi Gategaka“ (b, voc) and Clive Brooks as „Basil Dowling“ (dr). The self-titled album was recorded in one day in 1969. It contains psychedelic blues rock of the late sixties, enriched with many weird and crazy organ solos, space-rock guitar freakouts and a few strange, mystical-esoteric lyrics. It was released in England and the USA in the same year. A year later, the German pressing followed on Vogue, among others.
However, the record went completely under the radar, but nobody could have guessed at the time that not only the English original on Evolution would become one of the most sought-after and expensive vinyl collector's items today.
