A confusing name (named after a moon crater), confusing music and a confusing history: initially they were known as Uriel, but then Steve Hillage (of Gong fame) left the group, and the remaining members formed the band Egg. Later, Hillage returned, and they reunited to record this album under the name Arzachel. Hillage then left the band again, and the others returned to Egg...
As the band Egg were signed to Decca but received an offer to record an LP of the then-trendy psychedelic music, they agreed and renamed themselves Arzachel. The four musicians also adopted pseudonyms: „Basil Dowling“ was the drummer Clive Brooks, „Njerogi Gategaka“ was the bassist and singer Mont Campbell, „Sam Lee-Uff“ was the organist Dave Stewart, and the guitarist and singer Steve Hillage performed as „Simeon Sasparella“.
They recorded their only album in June 1969 in a single eight-hour session, which was released by the small label Evolution in July. It features two very different sides: Side 1 consists of four bluesy psychedelic rock tracks, mostly with vocals, whilst the second side presents two extended instrumental jam sessions featuring free experimental improvisation. This is a dark, psychedelic gem from the late 1960s, an absolute must-have. And an absolute favourite amongst collectors worldwide. Extremely rare! Even as an original German pressing!
