The Munich musicians' commune, known as the pioneers of Krautrock, was founded in 1967 as Amon Düül. A few musicians split from this original formation and founded Amon Düül II. The new group was led by John Weinzierl (b, g), Chris Karrer (vn, g, sax, voc) and Renate Knaup (voc, tamb), who produced an impressive debut album, Phallus Dei, released in 1969 on the multinational label Liberty. The other musicians on this recording were Peter Leopold (dr, perc, p), Shrat (bo, vn, voc), Falk Rogner (org, syn) Dave Anderson (b), Dieter Serfas (dr, cym) and guest musicians Holger Trülzsch (dr) and Christian Borchard (vib). It already illustrates why this LP is considered one of the classics of German rock history and was even released in England. The combination of a basic rock sound, free improvisations, rough psychedelia, bizarre lyrics and technical shortcomings is still extraordinary even today in its wild recklessness and courageous originality.
This incredible debut, which sounds completely otherworldly even by today's standards, is highly sought after today as a German first pressing.
