The US-American hard rock band Zipper was a project by rock singer and guitarist Fred Cole, who formed the band in Portland, Oregon, in 1973. His bandmates were guitarist Jim Roos, bassist Greg Shadoan and Lorry Erk on drums. As he also opened a shop for musical instruments and equipment called Captain Whizeagle’s during this time, this gave the band access to good equipment and a place to rehearse. They began writing and rehearsing their own songs and gave numerous performances in Portland and the surrounding area over the years. This was followed by sessions at Recording Associates in Portland for their self-produced eponymous debut album, spread over the period 1973–74.
It was self-financed and released in 1975 on Cole’s own label, Whizeagle Records, in a limited edition of just 500 copies. The album covers were designed by the band members themselves, with the edges taped together using different coloured adhesive tape. Their first and only LP presented a hard-hitting, acid-drenched psychedelic firework with distinct proto-punk tendencies, full of distorted guitars and raw, primal vocals. However, they split up that very same year and Cole formed his next band. This strictly limited private pressing is extremely rare and is now regarded as one of the cult albums in Fred Cole’s long garage punk and hard rock career.
