The year 1982: an obscure German band called Werwolf, with a record cover in sombre black and white. This suggests menacing and aggressive musical styles such as post-punk or heavy metal. Contrary to the spirit of the times, however, the quintet from the Sauerland region remained fully committed to symphonic progressive rock, a genre that had been in high demand and extremely popular some ten years earlier. Consequently, this album, which was out of step with the times, went completely unnoticed upon its release.
Founded in the early 1970s by drummer and singer Peter Besting, numerous line-up changes eventually led to the line-up that recorded the debut album Creation: Gitta Loewenstein (voc), Gerd Heuel (g), Wolfgang Unthan (keyb), Burkhard Huckstein (b) and Peter Besting. They played a varied, progressive rock style, rich in instrumental passages, with skilful melodic arrangements and a pleasant, ethereal-sounding female vocalist. Quiet, pastoral and spacey moments alternate with hard-rocking guitar and keyboard-driven elements. Werwolf self-released their first and only LP in 1982 in a limited edition of just 1,000 copies. Due to this small print run, this rare progressive rock gem is in extremely high demand among prog collectors worldwide as an original private pressing.
