Superb early Danish progressive rock with a bluesy rock foundation, featuring powerful electric guitar, distinctive keyboards and a subtle rhythm section. Alongside the vocals, the focus is on numerous striking saxophone riffs. Founded in Copenhagen in 1969, the sextet Thors Hammer consisted of Peter Nielsen (voc), Michael Bruun (g, p), Henrik Langkilde (org, p), Jesper Neehammer (sax), Henrik Bødtcher (b) and Simon Koppel (dr). In January and February 1971, they recorded their first and only LP at Metronome Studios in Copenhagen – a venue usually frequented by jazz musicians – produced by Freddy Hansson. The self-titled album, comprising five tracks, was released in July of the same year on the Metronome label.
Unfortunately, Thors Hammer was one of those bands that showed great promise but never went further than a debut album. Despite the English vocals aimed at a wider audience and Peter Nielsen’s magnificent voice… Nevertheless, this record with a cover art illustrated by drummer Simon Koppel, has been illegally reissued countless times. These days, the Danish original is quite rare and almost impossible to find!
