The Way We Live was a collaboration between just two friends from Rochdale, England, who had emerged from an earlier four-piece beat group. The multi-instrumentalists Jim Milne (g, b, p, org, voc) and Steve Clayton (perc, b, p, org, fl) made a demo tape that impressed John Peel, who didn't believe it was just a duo. He signed them to his label Dandelion. A Candle For Judith, named after Clayton's girlfriend, was recorded in just two days and was released in 1971. Their charming blend of folk rock, hard rock and psychedelia with some early progressive rock influences was highly praised by critics at the time, but did not sell at all. It remained their only album before they changed their name to Tractor. Today, this legendary and mysterious hard prog-folk cult record is recognised as one of the most coveted and expensive albums ever released by John Peel's Dandelion label.
