The double album Electric Ladyland, Hendrix’s epic legacy, was released in October 1968, 11 months after Axis: Bold as Love. This third and final album released during his lifetime was a sensational innovation and the only one over which he had complete control of the production. Guitar legend Jimi Hendrix played guitar sounds that no one had ever heard before, building on the innovations he had pioneered on his two previous LPs. He also developed groundbreaking recording techniques and sounds together with sound engineer Eddie Kramer. Due to his perfectionism, the recording sessions at New York’s Record Plant Studios lasted over a year, from July 1967 to August 1968.

This also explains the large number of guest musicians who helped him to push his psychedelic rock and funk sounds to the limit. Among them were such renowned musical greats as Chris Wood and Steve Winwood from Traffic, drummer Buddy Miles, Jack Casady from Jefferson Airplane, Brian Jones, Dave Mason and Al Kooper. Bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell were also back on board. The album cover with 19 naked women, which was only released in the UK, was soon banned and withdrawn from circulation. That's why this UK edition on Track Record is the rarest release and sought after worldwide. But even with the other cover designs, it is and remains a masterpiece of psychedelic rock and one of the best albums in music history, just like his first Are You Experienced and last LP as Band Of Gypsys.
