The two German musicians and producers Harald Neumann (guitar, vocals) and Hellmuth Opitz (guitar, harmonica, vocals) from Bielefeld in North Rhine-Westphalia formed the two-man band Target in the late 1970s. In 1979, the duo decided to release an album independently. With the support of musician friends such as the two guitarists Jürgen Schildmann and Ulrich Schultz, Wolfgang Hafner on bass and the drummer Matthias Schrumpf, they recorded their self-produced debut album When Silent Rebels Rise on 27 and 28 October 1979 at the Toncooperative in Hanover.
It opens with „Something in the Night“, a cover of the Bruce Springsteen classic, followed by a Bob Dylan cover „You Ain’t Going Nowhere“ and also offers self-composed, guitar-heavy (four guitarists!) and straightforward, hard-hitting blues-rock with English lyrics. The private pressing was released in 1979 in a handmade white sleeve with a glued-on photo and an accompanying lyric sheet, in a very small edition of just 40 (!) copies, and went completely unnoticed. The two musicians subsequently went their separate ways, and Target therefore remained one of numerous German bands that vanished entirely into oblivion. To this day, their first and only LP has not been reissued, making it virtually impossible to find a copy.
