The legendary Spanish power trio Tapiman was formed in Barcelona in early 1971 by drummer Joseph María Vilaseca (nicknamed „Tapioles“) and guitarist Miguel Angel Núñez. Bassist Pepe Fernández joined as the third member. The name of the new band is a combination of the first half of Vilaseca’s nickname and the initials of Miguel Angel Núñez. However, after a number of successful live performances and the release of a single, Núñez left the band. He was replaced by Joaquim Max Sunyer, who was regarded as Spain’s first „guitar hero“. With this new line-up, they continued to play numerous gigs and then recorded their first album in 1972 at the Gema Studios in Barcelona, in an unusual way: the recordings took place in front of a live audience.

In May 1972, their self-titled debut was released on the Catalan label Edigsa, featuring a provocative cover design showing a pink skull in full details. They were regarded as one of the rising stars of the Spanish underground rock scene and were a crowd-puller, beginning to perform beyond their local region. With their psychedelic, blues-infused hard rock, complemented by progressive passages and driven by the virtuoso guitar playing of their exceptional lead guitarist, they thrilled their audiences. Nevertheless, their LP received little attention and sold very few copies. In 1979, the band released another album before finally disbanding. Today, original Spanish pressings of this excellent heavy rock album are almost impossible to find and are traded among collectors as an absolute rarity at sky-high prices.
