The British band Stud is a synthesis of Blossom Toes with guitarist and singer Jim Cregan and the rhythm section of Rory Gallagher's Taste with Richard McCracken (b) and John Wilson (dr). The trio, newly formed at the beginning of 1971, recorded their first self-titled debut album shortly afterwards for Deram, the Decca sub-label, which was released in April. With the help of two guest musicians, violinist John Weider and vibraphonist Poli Palmer, they played their very unique progressive blend of folk, rock and long jazzy improvisations. Although the musicians showed a high level of skill and imagination and were highly praised by critics, the album did not attract much attention upon its release and sold poorly. As a result, Deram declined the option for a follow-up LP. The band enjoyed more success in Germany, where their debut was released with a different cover by Polydor.
The album has long been out of print and the original English LP in particular is now a sought-after collector's item.
