The British band Spring was based in Leicester and formed in 1970, all the band members had previously played in local bands. They performed concerts across the UK, including as the support act for the Velvet Underground. One day, when their tour bus broke down somewhere in the Welsh countryside, Kingsley Ward happened to come across the stranded band. He was the owner of the nearby Rockfield Studios and invited the group to an audition. Deeply impressed by their Mellotron-heavy progressive rock, he subsequently took them under his wing. Together with Gus Dudgeon as producer, a long-time collaborator of Elton John, they created an impressive „Mellotron orgy“, as no fewer than three of the five musicians played this instrument: Pat Moran (voc, mell), Ray Martinez (g, mell) and Kipps Brown (keyb, mell). Together with bassist Adrian Maloney and drummer Pick Withers, the quintet created one of the finest progressive rock albums, featuring harmonious soundscapes underpinned by intense Mellotron arrangements, powerful vocals, lush organ sounds and sensitive electric guitar work.
Released in late 1971, the spectacular triple-fold album cover, designed by the legendary Keef, quickly became a coveted collector’s item among vinyl enthusiasts. This RCA Neon LP, highly sought-after by collectors, remained their only official release, as the band disbanded shortly afterwards in early 1972.
