London-based Someones Band are one of the few amazing bands whose members met simply through word of mouth, contacts in the London music scene and wanted ads in Melody Maker magazine, and immediately produced such a professional and convincing album. The first-class musicians around the singer and percussionist Cecil James, guitarists Melvin Buckley and John Coxen, bassist Terry Powney and drummer Woody Martin, were offered the chance by an independent production company to record a demo tape for Decca Records. They received positive feedback and the opportunity to make further studio recordings. In a single night-time recording session, the quintet recorded the material for their first LP, produced by Steve Stevenson and with Mike Cooper as sound engineer.

The self-titled debut album was released in September 1970 on Deram, Decca’s sub-label. It contains brilliant and varied progressive rock, blues and soul, with influences from jazz, funk and African music, as well as compellingly powerful vocals from the excellent singer Cecil James. Unfortunately, the band’s first and only album was released in a very limited run and received no further promotion. The group disbanded shortly after the LP’s release. It is now a monster rarity and one of the rarest and most sought-after LPs of that era. And a real Insel favourite!
