Seelow & Mayer Formation was a short-lived band from the Stuttgart area, founded in 1969 by alto and soprano saxophonist Dieter Seelow and keyboardist Peter Mayer, together with the internationally renowned bassist Wolfgang Schmid and Hans Haug on drums. The quartet recorded their first and only album in June 1970 at the legendary Jankowski Studio in Stuttgart-Feuerbach. Their debut was released later that same year on producer Dieter Kruis’s own small jazz and soul label dk-disc in a limited run of just a few hundred copies, exclusively in Germany. The LP imaginatively combines the typical psychedelic and rock elements of the late 1960s and early 1970s with pulsating soul jazz, jazz-funk and hard bop.

It offers an exciting musical mix with many twists and sonic surprises, such as Far Eastern melodies, Latin American music and bossa nova rhythms, which were far ahead of their time. Due to a lack of marketing and promotion, the magnificent album Mr. Dynamite went completely unnoticed at the time and has since become a sought-after collector’s item. Today, it is rightly celebrated as one of the most innovative and interesting German rare groove albums of the early 1970s. Particularly in soul-jazz and jazz-funk circles, exorbitant prices are paid for the super rare original LP.
