Like the Beatles, the British hard rock band Pinnacle came from Liverpool and consisted of singer Owen McCann, guitarist Paul Thomas, bassist Alan Lawrence and Neil McKenna on drums. Dave Mylett (organ, Moog synthesiser) later joined the original quartet, completing the line-up as a quintet. Unlike the Fab Four, they played a dark blend of aggressive, progressive hard rock and psychedelic space rock, which at times bordered on proto-metal. After a few successful local live performances, they were given the opportunity to record an album. In 1974, they recorded their first and only album Assassin in just three days at the small Abbot Sound Studios in Chester, under the direction of label producer Dave Roylance.
It was released by the small, short-lived Liverpool label Stag Music, featuring an aggressive cover design by Nor Group Design LTD, in a small limited edition of 1,000 copies exclusively in the UK. After various live gigs until the spring of 1975 and the recording of four new songs on a live demo, the band split up due to a lack of success. Incidentally, the misspelling of „Assassin“ on the album cover is a printing error that the record label chose to leave as it was. Today, the album album enjoys a reputation as yet another forgotten masterpiece of heavy music and has become a highly sought-after collector’s item.
