The German trio Mythos was formed in 1969 in the Berlin underground scene under the leadership of multi-instrumentalist and singer Stephan Kaske (flute, keyboards, vocals, guitar, sitar), alongside Harald Weiße (bass, guitar) and Thomas Hildebrand (drums, percussion). After numerous live concerts, they made an extremely successful appearance at the legendary Langelsheim Festival in May 1971 alongside Can, Dull Knife, Scorpions and Colosseum. This caught the attention of talent scouts from various record companies. Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser with his legendary Berlin-based Ohr label signed the band. Recording for their first LP took place from October to November 1971 at the renowned Dierks Studio in Stommeln, under the production supervision of Dieter Dierks.

The self-titled debut album was released in March 1972 as the twenty-second Ohr record, featuring a fairy-tale-like cover design by the Berlin artist Gil Funccius. For many, this album by Mythos is one of the most interesting and varied releases on the Ohr label, across four instrumental tracks – some of which are quite long – it offers a delightful mix of art rock and psychedelia with classical adaptations, hard space rock with oriental influences, and acid rock driven by heavy guitars, mostly accompanied by phonetic experiments and cosmic sounds. This debut LP by Mythos is now sought after by collectors worldwide as a coveted Krautrock classic.
