Morly Grey was an American heavy-psych power trio from the small town of Alliance in the state of Ohio. It was formed by guitarist Tim Roller, his brother, singer and bassist Mark Roller, and drummer Paul Cassidy. Over the years, they built up a significant fan base in their local area, where the only record label was the tiny Starshine Records, which released just a few singles. After finding a manager there in Floyd Phillips – the owner of the small record label – and signing a contract, they began recording their first album in October 1971 at the Cleveland Recording Co. studios. They then recorded the second side in 1972 at Peppermint Recording Studios in Youngstown with drummer and singer Bob LaNave. In other words, each side of the LP was recorded in a different studio and with a different drummer.
From start to finish, though, the album presents an impressive, guitar-driven hard rock, enriched with psychedelic elements and echoes of the 1960s garage sound. Unfortunately, the only LP released by the rock label Starshine Records was hardly noticed by the public after its release in 1972. Nevertheless, it now frequently appears on many lists, such as those of the best heavy psych albums of all time. With a limited pressing of just 1,000 copies and a poster included (!), original pressings have rightly become genuine, highly sought-after rarities.
