A completely unknown album by a completely unknown short-lived German musical duo from Bonn in North Rhine-Westphalia. Metronic Underground consisted of the two multi-instrumentalists Thomas Wulke and Gernot P. Schilling, who played synthesisers, electric and acoustic guitars, sequencers and electronic drums. The recordings for their self-produced first and only LP Illusion, featuring guest musician Tony Orsten (vocals), were made on a four-track tape recorder. The master tape was ultimately handled by legendary producer Conny Plank.

Released in 1981 with a cover design by the two musicians themselves, the debut album showcased progressive electronic rock, ambient and experimental music, combining melodic and dissonant elements as well as some unusual vocal effects. Comparisons with Klaus Schulze and Edgar Froese from the Berlin School were inevitable, though they never achieved the same level of fame. Nevertheless, with their unconventional electronic sounds, combining atmospheric synthesisers with subtly interwoven distorted and acoustic guitars, they are regarded as one of the pioneers of electronic bands on the German indie scene. Never reissued to this day, this original private pressing in a limited edition of just 200 copies is a real rarity that costs a fortune.
