Mecki Mark Men, founded in Stockholm in late 1966, is one of Sweden's best-known rock bands, with a turbulent history full of ups and downs. It consisted of musicians who had all already made a name for themselves in various bands. To that they celebrated their breakthrough in July 1967 at a famous festival in the Swedish capital, and it wasn't long before they landed a record deal. Led by bandleader Mecki Bodemark (voc, org, vib), they recorded their self-titled debut album at the end of October with the following line-up: Björn Fredholm (dr), Thomas Gartz (dr, vib, sit), Hans Nordström (sax, fl) and Clas Svanberg (g). It was released in December on the major label Philips. They then accompanied Jimi Hendrix as the opening act on his Scandinavian tour, after which their LP was even released in the USA in 1968.
Although the group was relatively successful at this point, they disbanded for the first time in the summer of 1968. Reunited at the suggestion of the American record company Limelight, they recorded the LP Running in the Summer Night a year later, followed by their third and final album Marathon, before finally splitting up in 1971. Their remarkable debut (without a bassist and with two drummers) was one of Scandinavia's earliest psychedelic rock albums and presented an experimental mix of rock, jazz and psychedelia with lots of distorted lead guitar, impressive Hammond organ effects and Bodemark's dreamy vocals. This psychedelic classic is now considered one of the key albums of late 1960s experimental rock.
