Kahvas Jute was a short-lived Australian hard psychedelic rock outfit that formed in Sydney in early 1970. Led by Australian guitar legends Dennis Wilson and Tim Gaze (who also played piano), they quickly made a name for themselves on the live scene, not least thanks to their impressive twin lead guitar riffs. The quartet was completed by bassist Bob Daisley (who later gained fame with Rainbow, Ozzy Osbourne, Gary Moore, Uriah Heep, etc.) and drummer Dannie Davidson, who, like Tim Gaze, came from the psych-prog-rock band Tamam Shud. They played heavy psychedelic rock, driven by the virtuoso interplay of the two lead guitarists and complemented by a number of progressive elements.

Their first and only LP Wide Open was recorded and mixed in just three days under the guidance of in-house producer Pat Aulton at Festival Studios in Sydney. It was released as one of the first titles on the newly founded sub-label Infinity of the Australian label Festival Records. Although they developed into one of the finest heavy psychedelic rock bands of that era and played numerous concerts in their native Australia, the album sold virtually nothing due to a lack of support from the record company. Unfortunately, it remained their only commercial release, as the group split up shortly afterwards. Today, their debut album (also as a promo edition) with a cover illustration by Robby Harris, is regarded worldwide as a highly sought-after collector’s item.
