Ufo is the landmark debut album by Guru Guru, a power trio formed in Heidelberg in 1968. It was recorded in June 1970 and released on Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser’s legendary Ohr label. He had signed the band to provide yet another counterpoint to the established music industry. Drummer and vocalist Mani Neumeier, bassist Uli Trepte and guitarist Ax Genrich, together with producer Julius Schittenhelm, created a timeless German heavy psych-rock classic. This groundbreaking psychedelic journey is a highly experimental amalgam of various styles, including psychedelic and progressive rock, avant-garde, free jazz and musique concrète, with a consistently heavy, distorted, guitar-driven sound throughout.
For this cosmic whirlwind, the three musicians employed a wide range of instruments and electronic sound generators to create an album that no one would ever forget. They used various unusual electronic devices, a transistor radio, a mixing desk, an intercom system and a range of guitar effects pedals, as well as additional cymbals and gongs to expand the drum kit. The overwhelming critical acclaim ensured that the album sold quite well, laying the foundation for Guru Guru’s career. The enduring global demand for this album makes the original German edition in top condition on the collectable Ohr label an absolute rarity.
