Electric Sandwich from Bonn was formed in 1969 from a rather informal session band around drummer Wolf Fabian. Like him, the three other student founding members Jörg Ohlert (g, org), Jochen Carthaus (voc, sax, harp) and Klaus Lormann (b) all already had experience in other local bands. From the outset, they focused on spontaneity and maximum freedom, but gradually developed their repertoire into a set of thoroughly composed and firmly arranged titles, which nevertheless featured a significant amount of improvisation. In October 1971, at a band competition organized by the television magazine HörZu in the Niedersachsenhalle in Hanover, the group achieved second place out of 23 bands, together with the Scorpions. This earned them a record deal with Günther Körber's newly founded record label Brain. Their eponymous debut album was recorded in autumn 1972 at the legendary Dieter Dierks Studios in Stommeln and was released in spring 1973, exclusively in Germany. The versatile and energetic LP presented bluesy underground psychedelia with progressive elements, organ sounds, hard rock guitars, interspersed with saxophone and English vocals.
The band promoted their album and even toured with Uriah Heep. Unfortunately, the band broke up while working on their second album. Their first and only LP is now a sought-after collector's item, and not just among Krautrock enthusiasts.
