The short-lived German hard rock band Electric Mud from North Rhine-Westphalia recorded their only album in 1975 at the Förderturm Studio in Dortmund, self-producing it with the assistance of sound engineer Bernd Steinwedel. It was released that same year on the tiny independent label Förderturm Records, featuring an elaborately handcrafted cover showing a terrifying illustration: a screaming face with a snake crawling into its mouth and emerging again from the eyeball at the top. The four long tracks largely exude this eerie and sombre atmosphere in typical underground style, they are characterised by organ-heavy psychedelic hard rock and dramatic German lead vocals within an energetic, progressive musical structure.

The entire band – comprising guitarist Manfred Simhäuser, keyboardist Axel Helm, bassist and singer Udo Preising, and drummer Jochen Dyduch – disappeared from the scene immediately after this recording, as their self-titled debut received no attention. Electric Mud are one of those obscure German bands from the early progressive rock scene of the 1970s who only managed to record a single LP. The original pressing, with its hand-made cover, is extremely rare and consequently very expensive. What’s more, to this day not a single vinyl reissue of this album exists!
