The Danish band Burnin Red Ivanhoe from Copenhagen was formed in the mid-1960s. After several successful concerts in Denmark, including as the support act for Spooky Tooth, they caught the attention of the Sonet label, which eventually led to a record contract. Recording for their debut album M 144, featuring eleven (!) musicians, took place from February to May 1969 at the Ivar Rosenberg Lydteknik studio in Copenhagen (renamed Rosenberg Studio in 1971). Having been together for several years, they had enough material to record a double LP. It is a remarkable debut in an era when a running time of 65 minutes was already considered exceptionally long like Zappa’s Uncle Meat. This album lasts even 89 minutes!
Blues rock with occasional interludes of saxophone and flute, points towards a progressive direction from an early stage. The longer tracks, expansive in scope and complexly orchestrated, predominantly featuring wind instruments, offer psychedelic jazz-rock with varied instrumental passages and virtuoso solos. Released in October 1969 in an incredibly elaborate Gimmix gatefold sleeve, which, when opened, reveals a stage that folds up from the centre of an illustrated theatre. A dotted line marks a small slit into which a cardboard figure of a knight can be inserted. These original Danish editions, featuring the red Sonet Trumpet label, are now expensive and highly sought-after.
