After their self-titled debut, Bread, Love & Dreams consisted of David McNiven (vocals, guitar) and Angie Rew (vocals, bass, organ, percussion) at the end of 1969, at the time of extensive recording sessions for a double album. For the project, the short-lived duo from Edinburgh, Scotland, was supported by a number of illustrious musicians from the English folk rock scene, who were hired by producer Ray Horricks. These included Alan Trajan on keyboards, double bassist Danny Thompson and drummer Terry Cox from Pentangle, as well as sought-after session musician Dave Richmond on bass. However, the planned double album never materialised, as the record label Decca Records insisted on two separate LP releases. The first of the two albums was released in November 1970 with the title of an epic song on this album, The Strange Tale of Captain Shannon and the Hunchback from Gigha. The range of this acid folk classic extends from cheerful acid folk to gentle songs to rocking electric guitar. Their very own, unmistakable sound with sometimes very personal lyrics gives the songs a deep emotional basis.
However, this outstanding acid folk rock album was not particularly commercially successful. Nevertheless, the second part of the recordings was released six months later as Amaryllis by Decca, which again sank without a trace. Bread, Love & Dreams was subsequently disbanded and David McNiven and his future wife Angie Rew dedicated themselves to other projects.
