Birth Control was formed in 1966 from the ashes of two Berlin bands and was initially a typical contemporary cover band. In a time of heated social debate about birth control, they adopted the English term, inspired by an AFN radio station, as their band name. After various line-up changes, the band consisted of Bernd Noske (vocals, drums), Bruno Frenzel (guitar, vocals), Reinhold Sobotta (organ) and Bernd Koschmidder (bass), and they began writing their own songs. Live performances gradually made them well known, and they achieved their first major success as the support act at the „Berlin Super Concert 70“, which featured such greats as Jimi Hendrix, Ten Years After and Procol Harum. With a record deal from Metronome in hand, they recorded their sensational and provocative debut album at Audio Studios Berlin, produced by Didi Zill, who was also responsible for the cover design concept and the accompanying photos.
It was released in 1970 in the famous round fold-out cover, the so-called „pillbox cover“, which caused quite a stir at the time. They played heavy, psychedelic progressive rock with lots of Hammond organ, excellently accompanied by the powerful but also nuanced hard rock voice of drummer Bernd Noske, who sang humorous and provocative lyrics. Today, it is an extremely rare Krautrock album; a copy with an intact cover and pristine record is practically impossible to find.
