Supernatural Fairy Tales is the only album by the band Art from Carlisle, Cumberland (Northwest England), formerly known as The V.I.P.’s. The band consisted of guitarist Luther Grosvenor, singer and keyboardist Mike Harrison, bassist Greg Ridley and Mike Kellie on drums. Produced by Guy Stevens, the LP was recorded in 1967 at London’s Olympic Studios exclusively in mono, a format that by 1967 was already largely a thing of the past.

The debut album was released in December 1967 on Island Records with a colourful cover, designed by Hapshash & The Coloured Coat, that convincingly visualised the psychedelia that was all the rage in rock music at the time. Heavy guitar riffs, sophisticated psychedelic effects and proto-progressive elements, combined with hints of pop, make this album an absolute masterpiece. The compositions are extraordinary, and the musicians are all first-rate. It is hard to understand why it is still so often overlooked to this day.

Following its release, the band split up that very same year. Together with the American musician Gary Wright, this led to the formation of the group Spooky Tooth. This LP is an absolute must-have for any collector of psych-rock and, as a British first pressing in mono featuring the „Orange and Black Eye“ design on the Pink Island label, is also of almost unbelievable rarity. It was reissued several times a few years later riding the wave of Spooky Tooth’s popularity.
