The advocacy of the legendary radio presenter and DJ John Peel and the positive reviews in Melody Maker, prompted Olaf Kübler, producer and manager of Amon Düül II, to ensure that the debut album by the German musical collective from Munich was also released in England. Like the German edition, the UK version was then released in 1969. Unlike the German release, the limited edition on the Liberty label featured unique psychedelic art on a textured cover, with no mention of the band’s name on the front. This impressive artwork perfectly captures the innovative blend of progressive rock, Krautrock, traditional folk and raga. On the back cover, Felix Scorpio’s liner notes, under the headline „White Helmet Fuzz Star In Munich Street Theatre“, featured excerpts from an issue of the International Times (IT/52) from 1969, which referred to radical street performances by the German Krautrock commune Amon Düül.

Phallus Dei, however, was only successful in Germany and set new standards in German rock history. The impact of this milestone in psychedelic Krautrock on the English music scene was, however, undoubtedly just as immense. The follow-up album then marked their breakthrough in Britain. That is why the original UK release, known as the „Blue Liberty“ with its striking cover, is today a rare and sought-after collector’s item worldwide.
