In the early 1970s, the Scottish singer-songwriter Jackie Leven made recordings at Mayfair Studios in London for his debut album, which, however, was not released at that time. Due to his drug addiction, he was constantly in trouble with the authorities, so he recorded these tracks under the pseudonym John St. Field. All this, of course, meant the end of any collaboration with the record company, which terminated the contract and shelved the recordings. Surprisingly, they were released in Spain in 1975 on the Mayor label Movie Play as an LP entitled Control.

This first and only LP is an unconventional and superbly produced masterpiece that blends folk and pop with progressive rock, paired with gentle melodies and psychedelic-tinged lyrics, delivered with Leven’s soft vocals. He was accompanied at the time by a full band, namely keyboardist Phil Ryan, flautist and saxophonist Joe Kuccer, pianist Alex Atterson, and Jesse Ballard and Juliet Lawson on backing vocals. Jackie Leven played guitar and bass and took the lead vocals; he wrote all twelve songs and was responsible for the production. However, this fantastic album failed to achieve any success and is now a real rarity. Years later, Leven founded the London rock band Doll By Doll.
